Michael Longley

Biografia

Michael Longley nacque a Belfast nel 1939. Fu uno dei poeti nord-irlandesi che emersero negli anni ’70 durante i troubles politici della regione. Longley, nato da genitori inglesi, studiò presso il Royal Belfast Academical Institution e il Trinity College di Dublino. Dopo aver insegnato a periodi a Dublino, Londra e Belfast, andò a lavorare all’Arts Council dell’Irlanda del Nord nel 1972, andando in pensione nel 1991.
Si fece notare con le opera No Continuing City (1969) e An Exploded View (1973), poemi che fondono la sensibilità nord-irlandese con la sua educazione classica. The Echo Gate (1979) è considerata la raccolta più importante. Le opere più mature di Longley affrontano temi come l’identità artistica e i problemi politici e sociali. Membro della Royal Society of Literature e della Aosdána, oggi Longley vive nella contea Mayo.
