Ciaran Carson

Biografia

Ciaran Carson è nato a Belfast nel 1948 e ha studiato alla Queen’s University. Nonostante abbia sempre vissuto in città, Carson parla la lingua gaelica e conosce anche le tradizioni e la musica dell’Irlanda rurale. Nel 1976 pubblicò The New Estate, che, con volumi di Austin Clarke e John Montague, inaugurò la Wake Forest University Press e con il quale vinse l’Eric Gregory Award. Dopo un decennio di totale assorbimento nella musica irlandese, Carson tornò alla poesia con sette volumi pubblicati dalla Wake Forest: The Irish For No (1987), vincitore dell’Alice Hunt Bartlett Award e Belfast Confetti (1989) vincitore nel 1990 del prestigioso Irish Times/Aer Lingus Irish Literature Prize for Poetry, dell’Ewart-Biggs Prize e dell’ Irish Book Award for Literature e candidato al Whitbread Poetry Award. First Language vinse il primo T.S. Eliot Prize per il migliore volume di poesie pubblicato in Gran Bretagna nel 1993. Questi libri furono seguiti da Opera Et Cetera (1996), The Alexandrine Plan e The Twelfth of Never (entrambe 1998). Nel 2000, l’istituto culturale irlandese-americano insignì Carson del Butler Literary Award for Poetry. Nel 2001 fu pubblicata la raccolta Selected Poems.
Dopo il pensionamento dal ruolo di Traditional Arts Officer presso l’Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Carson ha scritto tre opere di ricca immaginazione – Last Night’s Fun, The Star Factory e Fishing for Amber – e il romanzo Shamrock Tea. Nell’autunno del 2002 è stata pubblicata la traduzione dell’Inferno dantesco.
Oggi Ciaran Carson vive a Belfast con la moglie e tre figli.
